The Six Articles of Faith in Islam
Faith in Islam is built upon six fundamental beliefs known as the Six Articles of Faith (Arkan al-Iman). These core tenets shape a Muslim’s understanding of the world and their relationship with Allah. Accepting these beliefs is essential for one to be considered a Muslim.
1. Belief in Allah (God)
The foundation of Islamic faith is the belief in Allah, the One and only God. He is the Creator, Sustainer, and the Most Merciful. He has no partners, no children, and nothing is comparable to Him. This absolute monotheism (Tawheed) is the cornerstone of Islamic belief.
2. Belief in Angels
Muslims believe in angels (Mala’ika), unseen beings created by Allah from light. They serve various roles, including delivering revelations to prophets (e.g., Angel Jibreel/Gabriel), recording deeds, and carrying out divine commands. Unlike humans, angels do not have free will and exist solely to obey Allah.
3. Belief in Divine Books
Allah has revealed divine scriptures throughout history to guide humanity. Muslims believe in all previously revealed books, including the Torah (given to Moses), the Psalms (given to David), the Gospel (given to Jesus), and most importantly, the Quran, which is the final and preserved revelation sent to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Quran serves as the ultimate guidance for all of humanity.
4. Belief in the Prophets
Muslims believe in all of Allah’s prophets (Anbiya), from Adam to Muhammad (PBUH). These prophets were chosen to convey Allah’s message and guide their people. The final prophet, Muhammad (PBUH), was sent as a mercy to all mankind, completing the message of Islam.
5. Belief in the Day of Judgment
Muslims believe in the Day of Judgment (Yawm al-Qiyamah), when all individuals will be resurrected and held accountable for their actions. On this day, every soul will be judged fairly, and based on their deeds, they will be rewarded with Paradise (Jannah) or punished in Hell (Jahannam).
6. Belief in Divine Decree (Qadar)
The belief in Qadar, or divine predestination, means that everything happens according to Allah’s knowledge and will. While humans have free will to make choices, Allah’s infinite wisdom encompasses all things—past, present, and future. This belief instills trust in Allah’s plan and fosters patience in times of hardship.
Why These Beliefs Matter
The Six Articles of Faith provide a comprehensive framework for understanding Islam. They help Muslims develop a strong spiritual connection with Allah, recognize their purpose in life, and prepare for the Hereafter.
